Metropolitan District Commission is established.

1919

Created by the Massachusetts legislature and located initially on Byron Street, it is formed by merging the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission (est. 1889), Parks Commission (est. 1893) and Water Commission (est. 1895). Its purpose is to coordinate water, sewer and park administration in metropolitan Boston. At the time of its creation, the cities and towns in the Metropolitan Water district are using 130 million gallons of water a day and the Wachusett Reservoir capacity is only 155 million. The MDC is dissolved and its responsibilities are transferred to the new Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation in 2004.
